Fresh Water Under Ocean: This discovery has proved to be surprising for scientists. The sea is always known for salty water, but a huge reservoir of pure and drinkable water has been found about 400 meters below the sea floor of the Atlantic Ocean. This discovery has raised the hopes of scientists and water experts that it can help meet the world's drinking water needs in the future.
Researchers said that this water is not only pure but its taste is also full of freshness. By studying this fresh water reserve of the sea, scientists are trying to find out whether this water has come from glaciers, groundwater present on land or is a mixture of both.
According to a report by ZMeScience, Brandon Dugan, a geophysicist and hydrogeologist at the Colorado School of Mines, made this unique discovery. For this, he spent about 12 hours on a drilling platform in the sea.This reservoir of water was found beneath the seafloor off Cape Cod in the Atlantic Ocean. The samples extracted by Expedition 501 during drilling are believed to be part of a huge aquifer.
Scientists will now analyze about 50,000 liters of water extracted from here in labs around the world. Their aim is to know whether the source of the water is from glaciers or is connected to underground water systems.
This discovery also raises the hope that there may be many more such fresh water reserves under the sea. This may be helpful in dealing with the water crisis in future.
About 50 years ago, when an American explorer drilled in the North Atlantic in search of hydrocarbons and minerals, fresh water reserves were found. Apart from this, scientists believe that there are fresh water reserves under the sea near South Africa too. There may be such reserves under the sea floor in every continent, which can become an important means for humanity to deal with the water crisis in future.
